I once did a project for Bima Mobile (http://www.bimamobile.com/) who had a particularly ingenious way of aligning incentives. Bima aligns the interests of individuals, insurance providers, socially minded funders, and cell phone providers. The basic premise is that the more airtime you spend with a particular mobile provider, the more insurance coverage you "earn" for the month. - The mobile companies like this, because then people will use up and buy their airtime instead of swapping from provider to provider (if you've been to Africa, you know that people often swap chips or phones depending on who they're calling!)
- The individuals like it because it's gamified/fun, plus it's really easy to understand compared to other kinds of insurance: more airtime used, bigger payout for a claim.
- The socially minded funders like it because more people get access to insurance that they wouldn't otherwise have, providing much-needed social protection against financial shocks.
- And the insurers like it because partnering with mobile companies makes it easy for them to get a huge customer base and varied risk pool at the click of an SMS - suddenly they overcome the challenges to scale that usually plagues microinsurance schemes.
Also good for the user: it's cheap, it's easy, the payout comes right through mobile money over the phone. I was pretty impressed - it was one of the only times I've seen a straight win-win-win-win across the board
